A good box set watched with my Other Half is winter bliss

November 16, 2019

This article was written for Annabel & Grace, which is now part of Rest Less.

I was chatting with my Book Club and we all agreed that we enjoy sharing recommendations for TV series or box set just as much as books. I find it a struggle to navigate my way around Netflix and Amazon. I wish there was a way to ‘bookmark’ series with a view to watching them later. I find that whilst scrolling through I later forget the ones that I liked the look of and I can then never find them again.

It was only when chatting with a girlfriend that I was reminded of a series that I wanted to watch. So here are a few of the ones that I have enjoyed recently.

JACK RYAN on Amazon

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, or simply Jack Ryan, is an American political thriller spy web television series, based on characters from the fictional “Ryanverse” created by Tom Clancy.

If you did not watch series 1 then start with that and then watch the latest series 2. The first season follows the titular CIA analyst as he is wrenched from the security of his desk job into the field after discovering a string of dubious bank transfers, which are being carried out by a rising Islamic extremist named Suleiman.

The second season sees Jack in the middle of political warfare in a fictionalized corrupt Venezuela “suffering an economic meltdown that has fueled mass migration”. This concept was less than pleasing to the country’s actual government; one spokesperson described the theme as “crass war propaganda disguised as entertainment”

This is a perfect box set for a wet weekend in November.

THE GAME CHANGERS on Netflix

The Game Changers is not a box set but is a documentary which follows James Wilks – elite Special Forces trainer and winner of the The Ultimate Fighter – whose world is turned upside down when the discovers a group of world-renowned athletes and scientists who prove that everything he had been taught about protein was a lie.

The Game Changers mixes real-time, groundbreaking science with cinematic stories of struggle and triumph. The film features some of the strongest, fastest and toughest athletes on the planet.

If you are trying to get your family to cut down on meat eating this will certainly inspire them. Rather than discuss the effect meat-eating is having on the climate, this programme focuses entirely on how healthy it is for us to eat a vegetarian diet.

THE TEAM Season 2 on More4

This hit series returns for a second season, this time with a brand new cast. When seven people are shot dead at an illegal immigrant halfway house in Denmark, Europol’s new Joint Investigation Team brings detectives from three different countries together to track down the perpetrators before international disaster strikes.

The Team Box set

Seven people are killed at a shootdown in Denmark, including a Caliphate Union informant for the Belgian secret service. The only survivor of the massacre in Denmark is a young Syrian woman, Malu, who escapes into the vast marshlands. Danish Inspector Nelly Winther, German Investigator Gregor Weiss and Belgian secret service agent Paula Liekens are thrown in the deep end and must work together as the new Joint Investigation Team to find Malu. The little evidence available suggests a terrorist motive; an attack by the Caliphate Union could be imminent. But without the missing witness Malu, it’s near impossible to prove and prevent. Searching for her brings the team to an unexpected path leading deep into the art underworld that intersects with organised terrorism more than anyone could have imagined…

The whole series is available as a box set on More4.
