In search of Denim (and a snazzy blue coat)

In search of Denim (and a snazzy blue coat) Grace and Annabel at Marks and Spencer Camberley store in search of denim
“We’re going to need bigger trolleys!”

If you are as ancient as me you will probably also remember the days when only our mothers shopped at Marks and Spencer. If mine ever took me to our local store I would be slightly embarrassed – me? Wear M&S? I’m far too young! Well how things have changed over the decades – Marks and Spencer has so much to offer all of us, whatever our age.

Moreover, their fashion is now so on trend that you have to be quick to get it before it’s gone. I recently did a 30 mile trip in search of a pair of green suede ankle boots from their store in Worthing that supposedly had one pair. Incredibly, they were still on the shelf when I got there and I’m so happy because they are my absolute go to footwear these days.

Anyhow Annabel and I decided to visit M&S’s Camberley store to see what was new and interesting. There was so much to look at – not only denim but also lots of contemporary footwear, tops and jackets. And I’d like to add how impressed I am with M&S sizing and styling – for starters, the waists are more roomy and the footwear more true to size than they once were.

What consumer isn’t on the look out for sustainably made clothes these days. And quite right too. M&S has been selling eco-friendly cotton for years now.

As many of you already know, Annabel and I are major fans of M&S denim jeans. In particular the Sienna which is a straight leg/high waist combo with added stretch (£22.50) that seems to suit everyone and is really comfortable to wear. But even we were tempted by the wide selection of styles currently on offer…

We found these two elegant jackets and a super useful trench:

Sleeveless knitted vests are super useful as an extra layer and M&S currently has a good range:

And it’s not just blue denim jeans that M&S has on offer:

and last but not least, here’s that snazzy blue coat I mentioned in the title of this article. It’s the Twill Relaxed Single Breasted Coat. Available in turquoise or emerald and in sizes 6 – 24, this is a stylish snip at £69.

I must live on a different planet as I’ve never seen the range of clothes in M&S that you showcase…. A friend of mine refers to a type of clothing as “ Dorisy” and when I go to M&S that’s what I see!

Hi Judi. We love M&S not only for the basics (great jeans, lingerie etc) but now also for their on trend footwear and well priced coats. Agree there are some things they don’t do as well as other brands, but as I’m sure you already know, they have multiple other brands on their website who do. Best wishes, Grace

I love the Camberley branch of M & S, it’s my daughter’s local and it has the best range around. Living in North Kent I don’t get to go there often enough though as she is more likely to come to us than we go to her. Canterbury is my local branch and unfortunately doesn’t stock the range that Camberley does. BTW the Camberley cafe is a very good one for lunches.

Hi Susan. Apparently Camberley is one of their flagships and “straddles three counties”. Next time I’m in London I’m keen to visit their Marble Arch branch which, according to my London friends, often stocks fashion that other branches may not get. Best wishes, Grace

M&S – was once a supporter – no longer. The quality of the fabric is so poor in 2023, and has been for the last 10 years. Not only is the fabric poor quality, but too many of the clothes have ‘design features’, like bows and frills, that make M&S look ‘cheap’.

Hi Sarah. So sorry to hear your experience hasn’t been very positive. Mine has been the opposite – really hardwearing, well fitting denim jeans. Although I agree about a few of the design features, there is so much else available that equate to hard wearing, practical wardrobe essentials. Best wishes, Grace
