We love our dogs, even the puppies who chew everything and pee and poo all over the place. I currently have one of those as you will see in the picture. They love us unconditionally and consistently. Dog owners will tell you that they are their most constant companions. Cuddling a dog can be as good as 10 minutes of meditation. They calm one, they put one in the ‘Now’ and who could ever be cross with their dog.
My new pup, Yogi Bear the Labradoodle, has taken over our home and made it his own. Note to all empty nesters: if you want your children to visit more often buy a puppy. My four are coming home on a regular basis to see this bundle of cuteness.
Gene Therapy on dogs
Interestingly I recently read that the world’s most influential synthetic biologist is behind a new company that plans to rejuvenate dogs using gene therapy. If it works, he plans to try the same approach in people, and he might be one of the first volunteers.
The stealth startup Rejuvenate Bio, co-founded by George Church of Harvard Medical School, thinks dogs aren’t just man’s best friend but also the best way to bring age-defeating treatments to market. So they could be our answer to longevity. In the meantime I am enjoying the time that I have with my two dogs, who may not be about forever but in the relatively short life, compared to man, that they have I love them…to the moon and back!
George Church said that people will pay for their dogs. Maybe because dogs ask for nothing so we love to treat them. I have recently been in the pet- indulgence-market and I have found a few things that I want to share with you.
Home and Hound
I met Home and Hound when I was at the Early, Early Christmas Fair. I bought quite a few presents for my mad dog-loving friends as the tea-towels are a fun gift. Just find your breed on their website and then see what is available in the range. There are wash bags, cushions, mugs, notebooks and more.
They also have fabric for curtains etc. Maybe you want to go the whole way and create their own personalised dog bedroom!
The Country Dog Hotel
Going away for a break but want to know that your pooch is being really well looked after? Then look no further than The Country Dog Hotel. It was set up by Rebecca Linnell in 2016. It is now a place where discerning dog owners send their dogs for their own holiday. Nights by the log burner and days running on the Quantock Hills. Being surrounded by unspoilt rural Somerset. It must be every dog’s dream holiday. Videos and pictures can be sent to owners whilst they are away so that they are reassured that their dog is doing fine. There are other facilities and services on offer including a Spa with full grooming facilities. Dogs are taken on daily walks, or runs can be arranged. There is a delivery and pick up service from London and other places can be arranged.
Not on the High Street
If you want a fun gift for a dog lover look no further than Notonthehighstreet. They have gifts aplenty. From a personalised birthday cake to a fun dog lead hook it is all there for the discerning dog owner. And lots for cat owners too!
