Street Style – women over 50 with a youthful attitude

October 28, 2022

This article was written for Annabel & Grace, which is now part of Rest Less.

Recently I’ve been brave/cheeky enough to approach some women who I consider to have street style – whether contemporary, classic or athleisure. I was pleasantly surprised because they were happy for a perfect stranger to take their photograph – so thank you ladies. Am afraid I have no idea where they got their clothes from but thought we might all learn something from emulating their style or taking inspiration from the way these wonderful women over 50 have curated their outfits.

I met this lovely 50 year old Australian lady during one of my volunteer shifts at the Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice charity shop in Arundel.

Her contemporary spex instantly give her happy face even more character. There is no excuse for boring glasses these days when there are so many standout styles and colours available.

I was also intrigued by her choice of somewhat mismatched oversized clothes. But notice the way she has tucked one side of the shirt into her trousers? It’s those little touches that seem to add something special to an otherwise “ordinary” outfit.

This is Marvellous-Mother-In-Law at Goodwood. We had a fabulous day at the last race meeting of 2022, not least because we could wear smart casual instead of dressing up in hats and heels!

MMIL always looks enviably elegant in her classic but comfortable clothes.

I know Annabel and I often recommend that we all wear bright, uplifting colours but there is also definitely something to be said for a neutrals combination like the one that she is wearing here.

Her choice of a cream cardigan with a white tee shirt and dark straight M&S jeans gives her a really youthful look.

And here’s a prime example of uplifting colour. The ever glamorous BackPacking Granny looks fab.u.lous in her yellow spotted blouse worn with understated dark trousers and boots.

This is another 75+ woman that I really admire for her youthful style. She has an unstoppable zest for life and I think this is reflected in her wardrobe choices.

You can read about her globetrotting here and see why she took up yoga in her mid-seventies.

This is Geraldine, another of A&G’s talented contributors. She celebrated her 60th birthday by buying a camper van and travelling solo around the entire coast of the United Kingdom – you can read about her adventures here.

I was admiring her outfit when we met for a glass (or two!) of wine and a catch up in Midhurst the other evening.

She’s wearing a super comfortable top and jeans but has cleverly added unconventional patterned cowboy boots (found in a charity shop) and a stunning multi-coloured tasselled scarf. Go girl!

Another of our canny charity shop customers, this lady’s unconventional style caught my eye.

Her outfit was restrained and practical but definitely not boring.

The bright yellow mac cheered up the dull day, especially as she had paired it with an equally eye-catching Orla Kiely bag. And who says older women can’t wear Doc Martins!
