Pretty Collars to update your knitwear that are practical too

November 2, 2021

This article was written for Annabel & Grace, which is now part of Rest Less.

We are always looking for stylish clothes for over fifties women and this includes accessories. I love a small item that can jazz up your wardrobe. It might be a belt, some earrings or as I have recently discovered a detachable collar.

A detachable collar is an easy and affordable way to give your existing knitwear a new lease of life. They also save on the washing and ironing as you only have one collar to wash and I often just rinse them in the bathroom sink and not put them in the washing machine. Also if you are wearing fine knitwear with a shirt underneath the sweater can sometimes look too bulky so a pretty collar at the neck can be the answer.

There are plenty of versions in different fabrics cropping up on the high street, too. Here are some of our favourites…

From Boden a very simple detachable lace collar…

Artichoke has managed to find some very pretty and also practical ones….

Meanwhile from Yolke, Whistles and Ganni…..

Born in the Sun is a company that I discovered during lockdown when I couldn’t get to a hairdresser and so their headbands were my saviour. More recently I love their collars. They have some very bold ones but here are two of their more conservative ones that take me back to the 80s when Princess Diana made ruffle-neck blouses so popular.

And for some more versions on this theme….

This is not a collar insert but it is a sleeveless blouse from Me+EM. Engineered to work beautifully with cardigans, a woven bib panel features a v neckline with frill trims that will add a feminine elevation to your top layer. The sleeveless design also provides a seamless finish underneath slimmer fitting knits.

Worn here with a cashmere and wool blend jacket cardigan from Silver Pink for £145. Also available in a cornflower blue. Click HERE for more info

Then I found this insert polo neck from Whistles which is just what I need in the winter. I love a polo neck under a jumper but two jumpers is often too warm so this solves my problem. Available in navy and khaki.

And for the other end of your jumper….the cuff….I found the following at Me+Em.

I think many of these items would also make lovely gifts for your female friends as we head into the run-up to Christmas.
