The woman who went to bed for a year – Sue Townsend

October 6, 2012

This article was written for Annabel & Grace, which is now part of Rest Less.

Sue Townsend has always been a very entertaining author and this book is no exception to that rule. When Eva’s twins leave home for university Eva returns to bed and remains there – what an appealing thought, haven’t we all had it at some point or other?

There are numerous other characters who drift in and out of the book, some with fairly far fetched but amusing story lines. I particularly liked  Alexander, a dreadlocked painter and odd-job man who turned his back on a career as a “wanker banker” after writing off a high-performance car and killing his wife in the process.

However this whole ‘dropping out of  life’ plan does not sit well with Eva’s husband, Brian, as he does not enjoy her lack of kitchen activity plus it hinders his pursuit of an extra-marital affair with Titania Noble-Forester, his astronomer colleague. It is a very funny but also moving read and if you are suffering from empty nesting then this is a must read! It will make you laugh out loud!
